The Sacred Geography of Protection

These eight mother goddesses form a protective sword-shaped maṇḍala around the ancient core of Kathmandu city in the Kathmandu Valley. You can clearly see in both traditional iconography (Figure 1.a) and modern Google map rendition (Figure 1.b) that we created.

According to oral teachings, these goddesses existed naturally in these energy centers long before human recognition. The immortal siddha Sāntikarācārya, who resides eternally in the tantric chambers near the Swayambhū stupa, discovered these power places and attributed each location to its corresponding goddess, disseminating these teachings to qualified disciples for the welfare of sentient beings.

Indrāyaṇī's Specialized Function

Indrayani (Indrāyaṇī) is an emanation of Indra. The wife of Indra, the queen of his heaven is called Indrayani, but she is different from this particular Indrayani being referred to here. The Indrayani that we work with belongs to the class of powerful protective deities called matrika (Sanskrit: mātṛkā, Tibetan: mamo) who reside in charnel grounds and exercise guardianship of a maṇḍala (secret place) and provides punishment and rewards to human beings for their collective karma.

For one person, specific portions of the pūjā offerings might require donation to a young female temple caretaker, while another's ritual might require offerings to be made to an elderly woman associated with a different sacred site altogether.
