Who is Vasudhara?
Vasudhara (Tibetan: Norgyuma) is the Buddha of prosperity and resources of the earth. The Vasudhara goddess is considered someone who provides a stream of wealth and abundance to those who seek her blessings with sincere devotion.
In the Tibetan tradition, she is considered equivalent to Yellow Tara. However, in the Newari tradition of Nepal, her own unique identity is acknowledged, emphasized, and followed with deep reverence.
The Sacred Vasudhara Dharani
The popular Vasudhara Dharani from the Kangyur details the inspiring discussion of how reciting the Vasudhara dharani helped the householder Sucandra achieve prosperity in no time. It was under Sakyamuni Buddha's wise advice that Sucandra recited and treasured the Vasudhara dharani.
Following Sucandra's example of success in manifesting wealth in the right way (samyak way), the Buddha encourages everyone who is listening - his usual audience of sravakas, pratyekabuddhas and bodhisattvas - to treasure and recite the dharani.
Sacred Shrines of Vasudhara in Nepal
In the Newari Buddhist tradition, Vasudhara is considered so important that, surprisingly to many people's awareness, there is a whole Vasudhara shrine house called Vasupur dedicated to the goddess on the same platform where the great Swayambhu stupa stands, overlooking the Kathmandu Valley.
Another important shrine is one of the oldest dedicated to the goddess, situated in the place that is named after her: Basundhara.
