Ānanda Bhairav is a wrathful protector. He sits next to the marvelous Gyāneśvara Mahādeva. In general, Bhairavas are considered emanation of Shiva.

Ānanda Bhairav is also considered one of the eight Bhairavas whose consorts are the eight mātṛkās (mother goddesses), who surround the periphery of each of the major cities of the Kathmandu Valley (Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, and Patan).

Rituals at Ānanda Bhairav are done to address strong obstacles and harmful negative energy including different kinds of spirits.
